Protect Your Web Future

On the Internet, you will see a lot of claims and promises and wonder how people get away with this.

Actually, many don't!

And unfortunately, I have seen some HONEST business go down because of a small error in the way they present themselves online.

You need to watch what you say, tell the truth, and have the proper legal disclaimers on your sites. Getting a lawyer to review your site and prepare the documents could cost a lot, but not having these protections could cost you much much more.. and maybe shut down your whole business.

The Whitlock Heritage in Printing and Publishing

Here's some evidence that I didn't just get started recently in publishing and book marketing.

The Whitlock Pony offered operators a 20-40% increase in productivity.

We Whitlock have always been into giving you better results.

The truth is, I have no idea how I might be related to the owners of the Whitlock Prinint-Press Manufacturing Company of Derby, Conn and even if I am, there is no direct connection of printers ink in the veins of my father, grandfather or anyone else in between the Pony guys and me.

YouTube Adds Book Marketing Features for Authors

We've be posting some of our videos and video clips with book marketing tips on YouTube and other video sharing services.

Great promotion for our books, such as my new Twitter Revolution book on social media, plus interviews, tips, etc that I like to share.

Now YouTube is offering a "click to buy" feature that will allow you to talk share a book, and a link for those that want to buy.

While reading the news, I noticed this cool feature.. allow you to put your videos, or videos on a top (like "book marketing" here) right on any web site or blog.

Twitcast Fun - We're Writing and Promoting Our Book on Twitter

Deb Micek and I are writing a book on Twitter.com call Twitter Handbook

We decided from the start that the book would be open source, we want to do whatever we can in public, using Twitter and social media to connect with Twitter users and those who want to know more about social media.

This week will be our 3rd Twitcast (a broadcast on Twitter). It's actually just the two of us working in public. After a few minutes, Deb and I hardly get anything directly back and forth, there are so many more people involved.

Last time, we tried to get Twitter users to post comments to our blog, most just wanted to add their 140 characters right on Twitter. So this time we are using BlogTalkRadio where Deb and I will chat with those that want to call in, while reading and responding to Tweets.

Not the quickest way to write, but a lot of fun.

A Game for Authors Who Want to Sell Books Online

Many authors have tried one or more of the social networks and felt it was a waste of time.

Whichever you choose, you need to plan on spending a little time building a base to your following.. inviting friends and participating as much as you can to learn the system and make the initial connections.

Which is best?

Depends on your book/topic. However, I look at it like any marketing problem.. I go where the readers are.. test the promising ones and keep the ones that work.

One things is certain. Moving forward, you should have a presence on at least some of these networks

Why You Should Keep Writing Articles to Market Yourself

The following is a guest article. I feature the best book marketing ideas for authors from whereever I find them, and cross promote with other professionals and authors whenever I can. Leave a comment about how you like this feature and what other quesitons and topics you would like to read about here.
Maybe you have affiliate programs, maybe you have a service-oriented web site. Definitely you want more affiliate click throughs that boost your commissions. Definitely you want more qualified clients, and definitely you want more targeted visitors to your site. To stand out from the crowd do these things:

1. Feature your own free content on you web site to educate your visitors. This builds trust and they are more likely to buy from you. Make most of these articles your own to show you as the savvy expert.

2. Set up your articles with links that lead to your affiliate programs. When you write an article why something is important and useful to your audience, it's like a mini sales letter and sets up ready buyers.

3. Parlay targeted people coming to your site daily. Build these numbers by submitting your well-edited articles to top article directories like ezine articles.com and article city.com. When thousands, even millions, interested in your topic people, read your gems, they will eagerly go to your web site where after a few visits, will buy from you.

4. Know this viral marketing is the number one way to get BIG visibility. Because blogs, other web sites, newsletters, and big companies constantly need new content for their readers, you can expand to much bigger audiences.

5. Find out your visibility progress by Googling your name or your article title. Once you see the growth as min from 900 in four months to over 110,000 in 6 years. Read where you are featured, and send them more articles because they already used you..

6. Know consistently writing and submitting articles will make you well-respected and known globally. Be sure to send one or two weekly to top-rated Web sites to make your marketing sizzle.

Other article writing benefits include low cost, free if you do it yourself, and you attract many because you take time to educate them . The time to do this is also short, probably only four hours a week. Keep writing those articles. The payoffs are big.

My Meeting With The Famous Author

I spent this afternoon with Robert Cialdini (yes, the Influence guy).


Cialdini was speaking at the Fortune Small Business Conference and I went with my friend Donna Fox to record an interview with him.


I'll post a link to that interview when it's done.


He told us about some new information and I asked if I could share it. So you'll be among the first to hear..


On the subject of Likability, Cialdini told us that all of the sales training that says that you need to get people to like you is wrong. You know, the "find out what their hobbies are.. what you have in common so you can bond" stuff.


He explained that this will often come off as a fake. And here is the reason why.


To really bond with a person, you should focus on liking them. Really, sincerely liking the people you meet and want to influence. Once you find a real reason to like them, it's much easier for them to like you.


People buy from those they know, like and trust. The best way to be likable is to like people

How To Find Partners to Promote Your Book

I just received a question from Solly at AskWarren.com about finding people to help an author promote their book. I'd like to share my answer with you.

The first this to remember about partnerships is The Law of Reciprocity. Approach every relationship as an opportunity to add value, solve a problem or fulfill the desire of the other person and you'll find that it's much easier to get what you want.

The Law of Reciprocity says that if you give something to a person, they will automatically programed to want to return the favor.

Let's apply this to promotional partnerships.

I can almost guarantee that the people you are looking for are not listing "help a new author sell books" on their list of goals for the year. Rather, the potential partner is looking for more content for their blog, radio show, newsletter or magazine, or and interesting guest to attract more viewers. If the potential partner is a mailing list owner, they will be looking for the above, plus new subscribers.

So before you ask for help. Learn what the partner wants.. get if for them.. be a resource.

In our Accelerated Book Marketing coaching group, we follow this process by showing authors how to establish a solid presence on the web, with tracking to know instantly when there is an opportunity. We have a whole section on attracting publicity by getting listed as a resource that potential partners will be looking for, even before we launch a campaign to become a best seller.

Here's one tip from our section on Cross Promotion strategies that may help.

BE A GREAT CUSTOMER

When I'm working with a successful celebrity client, I ask them how they feel when someone approaches them in public. I want to know just what gets them motivated to help new authors (they almost always WANT to help but have limited time and resources).

Most authors tell me that someone approaching them that has read their books, subscribed to their newsletters or purchase a product will get a warm reception. A heartfelt testimonial is even better.

Imagine walking up to the most famous author in your books category saying "I read your book. You helped me...." and then the most important phrase.. "What can I do to help you spread your message further?"

Now, you may not be able to meet in person. Fortunately, the Internet will allow you to do this online.

1. Make a list of the authors you would like to partner with
2. Subscribe to their newsletter.
3. Watch for announcements of new books.
4. Order the book.
5. See who they partner with.. repeat the process with each.

As you start looking for partners in the network of authors that help promote other authors, you will discover dozens that are actively using cross promotions. Make sure you subscribe to their mailing lists, look at their free offers (that's how they market) and look for clues about their passions and desires.

You really can get anything you want by helping other people get what they want.

Making More Money.. Working for FREE

In Revenue Magazine, I read about Freemium business.. a new word for a model where the content is free (or ad supporter) and then upgrades are sold.

Sounds a lot like the models we've been using with authors. Even though most of our promotions require purchase of a book.. they model we're using would allow for a loss on the sale of the book to start a relationship with a client.

It can be a bit annoying to see lots of ads, and reminders to upgrade.. hardly feels free. However, these businesses are doing some of what I teach authors in using the law of reciprocity, that is.. you give before you get

The Free line is moving. Smart marketers are giving away more content to introduce consumers to higher priced content. Especially when the know the back end system is of high value.
